Where did you earn your degree and what certifications do you have?
In 2002, I earned my Bachelor of Science in Engineering Graphics and Design from Murray State University. I am also a LEED Accredited Professional.
How long have you been with DKN Architects and what are your responsibilities?
I’ve been with DKN since 2016. As a project manager, I coordinate efforts between the disciplines of architecture, structural, plumbing, HVAC and electrical in order to compile a complete set of construction drawings. I’m involved in projects from schematic design through construction completion. In addition to being a project manager, I provide in-house technical support for my coworkers in regards to our BIM software, Revit. One of my favorite parts of the job is drawing details of complex construction conditions. For me, the appeal of architecture lies in problem solving.
Why did you want to go into architecture?
My interest in construction started when I was very young. One of my favorite things to play with as a child were wooden Tinker Toys. I was constantly building silly contraptions and trying to figure out how things work. Some of those contraptions included a zip line for Barbie dolls, ridiculously huge wings for gliding off my grandparent’s roof (luckily, my grandmother intervened) and a very poorly made DIY lamp which resulted in my dad making me write a 7 page report on electricity (pre-internet, I might add). Back then, I would draw until my hand ached and I had pencil smudges all over myself. Architecture gave me a way to combine my inquisitive nature with my love for drawing and creating.
Which building(s) most inspire(s) you and why?
I am inspired by buildings that make me ask “how did they do that”. Zaha Hadid’s designs pushed the boundaries of possibility to create buildings that seem to defy the laws of physics. While I personally prefer more simple and minimalist aesthetics, I admire her boldness and ability to move beyond the conventional to create buildings that were truly astounding works of art.
What do you enjoy doing during your personal time?
My husband, Dennis, and I enjoy gathering with my family and friends for dinner, board games, and conversations that leave my face sore from laughter. One of my favorite things is the time I get to spend with my daughter on our “girls nights” when we’ll go see movies or play games at home and snuggle up on the couch. I also spend a lot of time at the dojo, practicing karate and exercising. The hard work is rewarding, exhausting, humbling and fun.
