Where did you earn your architecture degree and what certifications do you have?
I’m a graduate of the Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Design. I’m a licensed architect in the State of Kentucky and I am a LEED AP.
How long have you been with DKN and what are your primary responsibilities?
I’ve been with DKN since January of 2012. I’ m a project architect, I work on projects from design development through construction. I help manage the production of CD’s, bidding and permitting and review construction on site. My recent focus has been on behavioral healthcare projects.
Which architect(s) do you most admire and why?
I have a lot of architects I admire. I really like the work of Charles Rene Mackintosh. His buildings, furniture and art are examples of Art Nouveau at his best. I enjoy the architecture and writing of Daniel Libeskind for his exploration of meaning and modernity in design, if you get a chance to see him speak he is one of the best speakers on any subject I have ever seen. I was introduced to Zaha Hadid in College and she is one of my favorites for her use of modern forms and exploration of pushing the possibility of design.
What building(s) most inspire you and why?
Mackintosh’s Glasgow School of Art is considered by many to be the first Modern Building. The use of organic forms and geometries are very appealing to me and the way light is used in the building. Danile Libeskind’s Jewish museum in Berlin is a fascinating exploration of modern architecture through its meaning and forms. Zaha Hadid’s Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati is a personal favorite, I Love the way you move vertically through the building and the way it addresses the context of Downtown Cincinnati.
Why did you want to become an architect?
As a kid I was always building club houses and tree houses in my back yard or drawing in a sketchbook. I pursued art and photography in high school. Through teammate on my high school basketball team I got the opportunity to take architectural drafting at Ahrens Vocational School and saw that architecture would give me an opportunity blend art and building of my two favorite things. One thing led to another and found myself at Ball State University and the rest as they say is history.
What do you enjoy doing during your personal time?
I like to go camping and hiking. I enjoy deer and turkey hunting, though I’m rarely successful. I tend to pick the coldest night of the year to go camping in Eastern Kentucky each fall with my father. I help design and make props, masks and costumes for Turners Circus and Cirque Louie. For recent productions I’ve made reindeer and troll masks, a two person horse costume and life sized articulated Human figure model that performers danced with. I try to spend at least a week each summer at the beach and I love to smoke meat on my back yard smoker.
